Profiling women in business: It's about fun

Robin Williams finds joy in her work

2013-01-31_12-42-42_127Robin Williams is her company's biggest fan and that positively affects her work effort.

“I love my job, I have fun, and I spread the word about Holiday Lanes that gets people's attention. It's important that people see all the aspects of bowling and not just the fun/social aspect,” she said.

The Director of Marketing for Holiday Lanes in Bossier City downplays her role in helping boost the bowling center's reputation and patronage.

“I'm just a small piece of the puzzle, my efforts aren't going to do any good if (everyone else) doesn't do their job. I'm the starting point, but it's everyone else here who works hard that makes this work,” said Williams.

While work is important, the Lake Charles native's role as mother of two creates a certain juggling act.

“My main concerns are my work and my kids. I'm a single mom, so sometimes it's a little hard to do both but I do it and it's fun, and my kids enjoy it too because I work at home,” said Williams.

Her job requires her to represents Holiday Lanes at sponsored events, maintains the business' website, and promotes the company and community through social media. She also schedules large groups of bowlers and Play Therapy for companies using Holiday Lanes as a team building activity.

Williamscredits her position's flexibility and creativty as the reasons she can get the word out.

“I don't have any constraints on what I can do, so if it sounds fun and raises awareness of Holiday Lanes, I'm allowed to do it,” she said.

That flexibility extends to allowing her to be involved in several community outreach programs, such as serving as a diplomat for the Bossier Chamber of Commerce, secretary for Keep Bossier Beautiful, and a member of the Public Relations Association for Louisiana.

“Anything that looks like it's going to be important for the community, I try to make a presence for Holiday Lanes,” said Williams.

And the self-described introvert enjoys getting out and about because it causes her to experience things she would otherwise have foregone.

“I love being in the community and meeting all these people, and it's not only helped our business, but helped me beecause I'm a shy, introverted person and I have to force myself to go to these things and it's helped me come out of my shell,” said Williams.

One of her biggest efforts that combines bettering the community and her job is Holiday Lanes' effort to promote bowling as a fitness opportunity.

“Our goal is to get every student bowling in PE. Bowling is a lifetime sport, it's a good way to stay fit and it's an indoor sport. If you've bowled, sometimes you wake up the next morning and you're a little sore,” laughed Williams.

Along with burning an average of 100 calories per hour, bowling is an activity that can also be enjoyed by the entire family.

“You're doing an activity that's fun for both parents and kids that is also a form of exercise,” she said.

Currently, Holiday Lanes is trying to design a bowling fitness routine.

“We want to encorporate a way to workout on the lanes and encourage everyone that it's a great way to stay fit,” said Williams.

So what is the secret to being a successful businesswoman these days?

“You have to remember to have fun and prioritize your family, and always do your best. Every day is different, so don't be so hard on yourself and do what your best is for that day,” she said.

And by those standards, Williams said her shy nature makes it difficult to accept the recognition she receives.

“I know that I'm successful but it's hard to accept that so I try to stay humble but recognize that I am doing a good job,” she said. “If I wasn't, I wouldn't still be in this position.”
