Basketball: Bearkats, Lady Tigers win

bossiergirls1The Bossier Bearkats and Benton Lady Tigers won last Friday on what was otherwise a tough night for parish basketball teams.

Bossier, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A, ran its record to 23-3 with a 65-35 District 1-3A victory over Loyola at home.

Benton helped its playoff prospects with a 52-42 victory over Minden at Benton.

In District 1-5A boys play, Airline gave 10th-ranked Byrd all it wanted before falling 97-94 in overtime, Parkway lost to district leader Captain Shreve 75-51 and Haughton fell to Southwood 66-49.

All three parish schools finished the first half of district play 1-4. Shreve leads at 5-0 followed by Byrd at 4-1 and Southwood at 3-2.

In District 1-4A, Benton dropped a 72-52 decision to Minden.

In girls 1-5A action, Haughton fell to No. 1 ranked Southwood 66-30, Airline lost to Byrd 72-46 and Parkway lost to Captain Shreve 46-26.

Haughton finished the first half of district play tied with Byrd for second place at 3-2. Parkway is 2-3. Airline and Shreve are 1-4. Southwood leads at 5-0.

In District 1-3A, Bossier dropped to 1-1 in district play with a 46-35 loss to Loyola.

At Bossier, the Bearkats overcame an early 8-0 deficit to rout the Flyers.

Tevin Robertson led the Bearkats, who improved to 2-0 in district, with 17 points. Deorvion Robinson added 13 points, and Rashard Owens had 10.

At Byrd, Hayden Hildebrand hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left in the game to send it into overtime tied at 83. The Jackets (21-4, 5-1) outscored the Vikings 14-11 in the extra period.

Hildebrand had a big game, scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Andrew Latson added 20 points and Demetrius Early had 18.

The Vikings led 40-31 at the end of the third quarter and 60-51 going into the fourth.

At Shreve, Gabe Decuir led Parkway with with 10 points.

At Benton, Kordavion Stewart scored 12 points and LeeAaron Alexander added 11 to lead Benton.

Madi Sessions came up big for the Benton girls, scoring 26 points. Destiney Wallace added 10 and Megan Fream had nine.

Benton improved to 3-2 in district play and is in second place in 1-4A behind Huntington (6-0).

Claire Crawford scored 16 points and Nikki Bryant had 13 in Airline’s loss to Byrd.

Halle Washington topped Parkway with nine points in the loss to Shreve.

Brittany Robinett and Chelcy Swint scored 12 each in Haughton’s loss to Southwood.

Bossier trailed Loyola by just two points at the half, but the Lady Flyers pulled away in the second.

Bree Williams led the Lady Kats (12-12) with 10 points.
