SOCCER TEAMS  PLAY DISTRICT  GAMES TONIGHT

Bossier Parish high school soccer teams resume district play tonight.

In District 1, Division I boys and girls games, Parkway faces Caddo Magnet, and Airline takes on Byrd. All four games are at Tinsley Park.

The Airline boys improved to 19-2 overall and 6-1 in district with a 9-0 victory over Southwood last Thursday.

Esteban Cornet-Baides and Matt Hanisee scored two goals each for Airline. Scott Bowers, Will Coyer, Matt Henry, Bryan Medreno and Addullah Rayyan had one each. David Espino, Esteban Guevara, Hanisee, Henry, Jacob Mainiero and Medreno had assists.

The Airline girls improved to 9-11 overall and 4-3 in district with a 7-0 victory over Southwood. The Parkway girls are third in the standings at 4-2. Byrd leads at 7-0.

Caddo Magnet (12-5-1, 6-0) leads Airline by a half-game in the boys standings. Parkway, which defeated Haughton 3-1 Friday night, is tied for fourth at 4-3.

Benton visits Minden for Division 1-II boys and girls games. The Lady Tigers are atop the standings with a 3-0 mark. The Tigers are second at 3-1.

Bossier travels to Vivian to face North Caddo in District 1-III action. The Bearkats are 3-1 in district play, a game behind Loyola.

Tuesday night, Haughton plays Captain Shreve in boys and girls games at Tinsley. The Haughton girls lost a pair of games to Caddo Magnet and Parkway last week. Coach Russell Melton said freshman goalkeeper Ashlyn Lietch stepped in for a senior starter and had 17 saves. Kade Schufft scored Haughton’s lone goal in the loss to Magnet.

EX-BOSSIER STAR WEST HELPS DEMONS ROUT LAMAR

NATCHITOCHES — Redshirt freshman guard Jalan West, a former Bossier standout, threatened the school record of eight steals in a game, finishing one shy, as ball-hawking Northwestern State made a young Lamar squad pay for its mistakes while posting an 86-58 Southland Conference basketball win Saturday afternoon at Prather Coliseum.

West ranks 38th nationally in steals and raised his season's average from 2.3 to 2.7 Saturday in just 20 minutes.

The Demons outscored the Cardinals 27-2 in points off turnovers, snagging 12 steals as Lamar suffered 20 turnovers. Northwestern made only 10 while getting balanced offensive production led by 15 points apiece from Shamir Davis and DeQuan Hicks, with O.J. Evans adding a season-best 10.

It was the third straight win for the Demons (8-4 overall, 2-0 in the Southland) in their fourth game in seven days. They play three more next week, all conference games on the road.  Lamar dipped to 2-12 overall and 0-2 in league play after its 13th road game of the season.

TECHSTERS HOLD OFF TEXAS-ARLINGTON

RUSTON — Kelia Shelton recorded her first career double double with 16 points and 13 rebounds as Louisiana Tech withstood a late Texas-Arlington rally as the Lady Techsters prevailed 65-58 Saturday night.

Freshmen Lulu Perry, a former Benton star, came off the bench to score six points in 13 minutes of playing time. She was 3-of-7 from the field.

Shelton was held scoreless in a first half that saw Tech built a 38-27 halftime lead behind 25 points off the Lady Techster bench, spearheaded by nine from guard Kanedria Andrews who finished with a career-high 10 points and five boards.

However, Shelton - who entered the game leading the team in scoring - got rolling in the final 20 minutes as she played the entire second half.

Although Tech built a 15-point advantage at 55-40 with 10 minutes to play in the game, the Mavericks (3-10, 1-2 WAC) wouldn't go away and capitalized on a LA Tech drought from both the field and the free throw line down the stretch.
