Sheriff's Office seeks volunteers for Mounted Patrol Unit
The Bossier Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking volunteers who are interested in becoming part of the agency’s mounted patrol unit.
The equestrian team will represent the Bossier Sheriff’s Office at community events, such as parades, rodeos, and events throughout the parish with have no law enforcement duties.
While the group is strictly for ceremonial purposes, Sheriff Julian Whittington said riders still have a valued role in the community.
“We have many of our residents who are avid horse riders, and I want to provide for them an opportunity where they can be part of something special with their Bossier Sheriff’s Office,” Whittington said. “This is a good opportunity for people to show off their animals, their talent and to just have some fun.”
Whittington said they decided to bring the group back after a three decade break. He added that horses and handlers have always been a valued asset to their force.
“Before we had four wheelers and thermal imaging devices, horses were the only way to get into heavily wooded areas and places not accessible to vehicles,” Whittington said.
Riders of all ages and backgrounds (trail riders, professional riders or those who simply enjoy riding horses) are encouraged to sign up.
Riders must have their own horse, tack and necessary supplies, as well as a way to trailer their horse. Horses should be well-broken and able to work around crowds of people.
Don Bernard, a local agricultural specialist, has volunteered his knowledge and experience with horses to help the sheriff’s office form the equestrian team. He said they are looking for well disciplined animals
“Handlers should be familiar with their horses and vice-versa,” Bernard said. “The more you’re around a horse the more experience you’ll get.”
Bernard said the riding unit is typically a crowd favorite.
“Everybody loves the horses. People are intrigued by them,” Bernard said.
Interviews will then be coordinated in January followed by arena trials to observe how the horse and handler work together. Those interested in becoming a member of the Bossier Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol unit should call 965-3411 to sign up.
