The Ouachita Lions proved to be too much for the Haughton Buccaneers to handle Friday night in Monroe.
The Lions defeated the Bucs 55-20 in a Class 5A first-round playoff game. Haughton, the No. 24 seed, ended its season at 7-4. Ouachita (8-2), the No. 9 seed, visits No. 25 Ruston in the second round.
Ouachita, the District 2-5A runner-up, raced to a 27-3 lead and led 41-13 at the half.
Haughton’s Benny Broadway kicked two field goals in the first half and Haughton quarterback James David Almond hit P.J. Douglas for a 41-yard score. Almond also scored on an 8-yard run in the second half.
The Bucs simply couldn’t stop Ouachita’s offense.
The Lions rolled up 487 yards of total offense, including 347 on the ground.
Nigel Dora rushed for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Diquan Wilson hit Taijuan Thomas on a 98-yard touchdown pass just before the half.
While the Bucs will lose NSU commitment Almond, the future looks bright.
Among the underclassmen on the team are twins Jerrod and Jarred Craft, juniors who played on both sides of the ball.
Jarred Craft was the Bucs’ leading rusher on the season. He rushed for a 143 yards on 24 carries, giving him 1,029 yards for the season. Jerrod Craft caught five passes for 60 yards.
Douglas, the team’s leading receiver, is also a junior. He had three catches for 57 yards.
