Panthers get shot at Jackets

E-mail Print PDF

Last week, the Haughton Buccaneers got the first shot at defending 1-5A champion Byrd as district play opened.

The Bucs led by two touchdowns at the half but the Yellow Jackets rallied in the second for a 27-21 victory.

Thursday night, it’s Parkway’s turn.

The Panthers (6-0, 1-0) put their undefeated record on the line against the Yellow Jackets (4-1, 1-0) at Lee Hedges Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Parkway hasn’t been challenged this season. The Panthers are coming off a 49-12 victory over a Southwood team that was effective throwing the football early in the game.

Thursday, Parkway will be facing a Byrd offense that is run-oriented. To win, the Panthers will have to slow down Yellow Jackets running back Xavier Long, who had 166 yards rushing against Haughton. Long has gained 417 yards on the season.

Haughton had success throwing the ball against Byrd in the first half last week.

The Parkway offense, which hasn’t played a whole game all season because of routs, is led by junior quarterback Brandon Harris.

Harris has completed 60 of 118 passes for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Brodrick Jefferson and Corey Hamilton have been his favorite targets. Jefferson has caught 21 passes for 367 yards and five touchdowns. Hamilton, an All-Bossier Parish track athlete last spring, has 18 catches for 353 yards and six touchdowns.
