Southwood’s Lady Cowboys, who have won two straight Class 5A state championships (and four in the last five years) are 25-2 for the season and 3-0 in District 1-5A play after a 48-35 victory over Airline Friday night in a rematch of the 2006 state championship game.
Leading by four points after three quarters, the Lady Cowboys took advantage of more trips to the free throw line to outscore the Lady Vikings 18-9 in the last period.
Jennifer Gardner, with 13 points, was the only Airline player in double figures as the Lady Vikings, now 17-7, were 0-for-2 at the free throw line and Southwood was 12-of-20.
Sondra Adams scored eight points for Airline, while Rashima Jenkins had six points and 11 rebounds.
