The Winter Standard Basketball Tournament got under way at Bossier Parish Community College Thursday, with Murrah High of Jackson, Miss., scoring a 65-35 victory over Benton’s Lady Tigers.
Benton trailed by only six points (26-20) at halftime, but was no match for the Mississippi team in the second quarter as Murrah broke the game wide open with a 25-6 third quarter.
“I think we just kind of gave up,” Benton coach Mary Ward said of her team’s second-half collapse. “We made a few turnovers and we didn’t get back on defense, but hats off to them for having the athletes and the game plan to take advantage of it.”
Nekedra Ford led Benton scorers with nine points as the Lady Tigers dropped to 14-7 for the season. Benton was scheduled to play Lakeside Friday afternoon.
It was the tenth victory in as many games for the winners.
Another District 1-3A team, Mansfield, scored a 53-29 victory over Lakeside in the opening session of the tournament.
The Lady Wolverines led 28-9 at halftime and 44-15 after three quarters.
Sharday Cotton scored 15 points and Christy Jackson 11 for Mansfield, which improved to 9-6 for the season.
Wayne County, another unbeaten Mississippi team, scored a 67-49 victory over defending champion Glen Oaks of Baton Rouge.
Wayne County was scheduled to play Mansfield at 5:30 Friday and Murrah played Glen Oaks in the 7 p.m. nightcap Friday.
