Haughton’s band shines at competition

Haughton High School's Big Red Buccaneer Band has every reason to bang on their own drum. They have been sweeping competitions, both near and far.

Haughton's band was recently invited to participate in the Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands State Competition at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, where they competed in Class AA. Band Director Kevin Williams said after the initial performance, Haughton was named as a 'Top 10 Finalist' and performed again that night.

"When the complete results were announced, the Big Red Buccaneer Band was named the Class AA State Champions, the Small Class State Champion and earned ninth place among all classes in the state," Williams elaborated.

He added that the Color Guard was rated superior; the drum major, superior and the band, superior.

Talk about an impressive showing...

Prior to that competition, the Buccaneer Band participated in the Parkway Marching Competition and received all ones -- the highest possible score -- in all categories, in addition to several other honors including Most Outstanding Percussion, Most Outstanding General Effect and Most Outstanding Band. The band placed second overall.

The band was also awarded straight ones at the Caldwell Marching Festival.

It has been a great year already for the Big Red Buccaneer Band, but it is not over yet. The 150 band members are now gearing up for concert season, something they are looking forward to.
