Cope, Elm Grove sweep district foes

The Cope Lady Cougars and Elm Grove Lady Eagles seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams remained undefeated in district play with sweeps Monday.

Cope defeated Rusheon 28-19 in the seventh-grade game and 32-29 in the eighth-grade game.

Elm Grove downed Benton 32-17 in the seventh-grade game. The Lady Eagles edged the Lady Tigers 22-21 in the eighth-grade game.
Haughton defeated Greenacres 27-21 in the seventh-grade game. The Lady Mustangs won the eighth-grade game 16-11.

Cope and Elm Grove are both 3-0 in seventh- and eighth-grade district play.

At Cope, Chloe Walker had a big game for the seventh-grade Lady Cougars, scoring 14 points. Ariel Scott and Peyton Brown combined for eight.

Rusheon’s Cecila Cruz, Chrishawna Jones and Destiny Thomas combined for 14 points.

Krystal Grannum was a double-figure scorer for the Cope eighth-grade team with 10 points.

Hannah Wooten, Keke Marshall and Ahshana Gipson added six apiece.

Brianna West led Rusheon with 14 points, and Artisha Reney had six.

At Elm Grove, Mackenzie Terhune tossed in eight points and McKenzie McEntee had seven to lead the Benton seventh-graders.

Coach Maryjo Duddy said Malorie Gill had another strong defensive game. Beatrice Croitoru came off the bench and grabbed several rebounds.

Kichauna West topped the Benton seventh-grade team with eight points. Rebecca Grantham, Sarah Koeppen and Morgan Hearn combined for nine.

Duddy said Lynnse Terhune played tough defense. Hallie Saintignan came off the bench and hit a free throw after making a steal, nearly sending the game into overtime.

Elm Grove did not report its leading scorers to The Press-Tribune.

At Haughton, Champagne Dennis had a season-high 18 points to lead the Lady Bucs’ seventh-grade team.

Coach Shelly Morris said Dennis scored a lot of her points on fast breaks and on follow shots after rebounds.

Leah Hopson nailed a 3-pointer and finished with four points. Morris said Hopson had several steals and Keanna Barber hustled on every play.

Camila Rodriguez had a big game for the Lady Mustangs with 15 points. Jayla Miller, Brittney Roberson and Taisha Dagley combined for six points.

Greenacres had balanced scoring in its eighth-grade victory.

Ellie Wilkes led the way with six points and Tia Lowe had five. Trezier Alberta hit a 3-pointer.

Mary Gladney led Haughton with five points and Dy’unica Washington had four.

District play resumes Thursday. Benton hosts Cope and Rusheon visits Greenacres.

In a rare Friday game, Elm Grove hosts Haughton.
