Pam Carlisle, our Local History and Public Outreach Specialist, is promoting Louisiana Archaeology Month. The programs and activities for this annual event have been tailored for all ages. Pam has provided details about the event for this column. These programs are free to the public. I hope you will make plans to attend.
October is Louisiana Archaeology Month and the Bossier Parish Library Historical Center is excited to have this opportunity to highlight local cultural resources and the work archaeologists do. We have something planned for all ages. This year the adult program highlights the Civil War for the Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the turmoil and to complement the RELIC (Readings and Literature and Culture) program “Battleground Louisiana: Civil War Events and Experiences” that is currently underway at the History Center. If you want to be notified if we offer this RELIC program again, give the Historical Center a call.
For Kids age 7 and up, an ‘archaeology lab’ will be set up in the Bossier Central Library’s Children’s Department. This is a hands-on activity where children will get to measure, weigh and sketch artifacts. Archaeology books will be on display and available for checkout along with free coloring books and other items for children to take home. Drop in between 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. on either of the following Tuesday afternoons – October 2 and 16.
For Adults and older kids with an interest, on Monday evening, Oct. 15 at 6:30 in the Historical Center meeting room, Scott Dearman, Park Manager at Mansfield State Historic Site, will talk about Civil War artifacts using some examples from the Mansfield collection.

- CAC (Creative Art Connection) Art Show is on display at Bossier Central Library through the month of October.
- The second in the series of Sleep Clinic programs will be on Friday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Bossier Central Library. Call the Central library for more details at (318) 746-1693.
- Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Savvy Shopper columnist Jennifer Richardson will conduct a free Couponing Class. Pre-registration is required due to limited seating. Call Anne or Connie at Bossier Central Library, (318) 746-1693.
- Tuesday, Oct. 16 teens ages 13-18 are invited to attend the program “Literary Monsters and Their Legends” at the Bossier Central Library History Center from 4:30-5:30 p.m. And on Thursday, October 18 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. there will be a program about “Cryptology: Are These Creatures Real?” Contact Tonya at the Central Library for more information.
